What do Miranda Kerr, Jennifer Aniston, and Scarlett Johansson all have in common? Yes, they’re all stunning, but they also all swear by apple cider vinegar (ACV)!
Needless to say, our health and wellness expert, Marissa, hopped on the ACV bandwagon and set herself the personal task of taking a shot of ACV every day for a week. Some of the benefits of ACV that intrigued me were:
- ACV helps to relieve bloating
- It helps keep blood sugar levels at bay, especially after eating a carb-heavy meal
- It gives you energy without the caffeine jitters
- It helps to curb appetite
For one whole week, Marissa took 2 tablespoons a day of Bragg’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, and here’s what happened:
After waking up, I poured 2 tablespoons of ACV into a glass and filled it with 8oz of water. It is recommended to dilute your ACV, and not to take it straight. The taste was nothing to rave about – it was actually quite disgusting, but beauty is pain, right? However, I can happily say that my energy levels were up (and this was without my daily dose of caffeine!).
Today I decided to do things a little differently. I decided to pour my 2 tablespoons of ACV into a water bottle with sparkling water and freshly squeezed lemon juice. This made the whole experience feel much more luxurious, and less like my tequila-filled university days. This really helped to cut the acidic taste, and it gave me a reason to drink more water! Killing two wellness birds with one stone: yes, please! Again, I noticed that my energy levels were up, and I was less hungry by 12 p.m.
Today I decided to take my ACV shot at 2 p.m. instead of first thing in the morning. I wanted to see if it would curb my afternoon hunger and help with my mid-day energy slump. I am pleased to say it did both! I took my shot in a conventional way (in a shot glass), and it was gross.
Since I was having a lot of success with ACV as a caffeine replacement, I decided to take one shot before my 6 a.m. workout. Big mistake. I was like the sloth from the Zootopia movie – no energy at all. I really should have had my plain old cup of vegan, sugar-free, bulletproof, mushroom-infused, collagen peptide ladened coffee, but the ACV shot just seemed so much easier! On the plus side, I am pleased to report that I am still feeling noticeably less bloated.
Day 5 and 6:
Mixed my shot in a bottle of sparkling water with lemon juice again. Feel free to re-read the day 2 report, as it was virtually the same. Also, still feeling less bloated!
Since it was Sunday and I actually had 3 minutes to indulge in a morning wellness routine, I decided to spice up my ACV. The ACV drink du jour was an immune boosting tea, which included hot water, ACV, honey (you can use liquid stevia for vegan sweetness), and freshly squeezed ginger juice. This was probably my favourite way to drink apple cider vinegar and actually left me feeling quite energized.
Would I do it all again? Yes! Would I do it every single day? No, but I would use ACV the week before a big event or a pool party in order to look and feel my best. Also, I would substitute my usual coffee for ACV tea during the afternoon, because coffee later in the day drastically affects my sleep. All in all, I will for sure be adding ACV to my wellness tool bag!
