This Everyday Product Is Actually A Drug

This week, Mary decodes: Aluminum compounds in antiperspirant.

Did you know? Antiperspirant is classified as an over-the-counter drug in both Canada and the U.S. Most of us grew up being told to start using antiperspirant at a young age to prevent body odor, but if our teachers and parents were aware that the product was classified as a drug, I am not so sure they would have been quick to suggest it.

What Is Aluminum Chloride?

Aluminum is a heavy metal that most of us are exposed to on a daily basis. It is a naturally occurring element from the earth and is used in the manufacturing of paints, cars, propellant, fuel additives, over the counter medications (like antacids), soda cans, aluminum foil, and antiperspirants.

Aluminum chloride compounds, such as aluminum chlorohydrates and aluminiumzirconium tetrachlorohydrex are the most effective antiperspirant agents you’ll find in conventional antiperspirants today.

How Does It Work?

Aluminum compounds in antiperspirants combine with sweat to form a gel-like plug, which prevents and constricts the sweat gland duct to perspire.

This is what keeps your underarms dry.

While this may sound like a good thing, preventing your body from sweating traps toxins in your body. Sweating also play a vital role in regulating your body’s temperature.

Long-term Use Effects

Long-term usage of antiperspirant actually creates more bacteria on your armpits once you stop using them, causing increased breakthrough odor in the beginning.

Long-term usage has also shown to form increased levels of aluminum compounds in the body, known as “body burden”. The body burden of aluminum in humans is similar to how fish become laden with mercury over time.

There is a reason why antiperspirants are classified as an over-the-counter drug — your body becomes dependent on it!

Why Should I Be Worried?

Unfortunately, aluminum compounds have been found to be able migrate into your bloodstream, as confirmed by blood tests. Women who shave their underarms then apply antiperspirant are more at risk for aluminum compounds to enter the body. Shaving creates micro-abrasions, causing pores to be more susceptible to absorption of chemicals.

Over the past decade, the FDA issued warnings on antiperspirant labels for individuals with weakened kidneys to be aware. You’ll often find the warning that reads, “Ask a doctor before use if you have kidney disease.”

Remember, what you put ON your body is as important as what you put IN your body.

Why is Aluminum In Antiperspirant So Controversial?

The topic of aluminum in cosmetic products is a controversial one. While there are little scientific evidence that links antiperspirants to breast cancer or Alzheimer’s disease, these chemicals are still being applied directly on the skin every day. The long-term health effects from the body burden of aluminum are essentially unknown. The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence of a harmful effect.

In my opinion, why run the risk? It is always better to practice PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE.  It is up to you as a consumer to make the decision if this is a risk to your health.

If you are an antiperspirant user making the switch to natural deodorant, it is important to know that this odor-causing bacteria won’t last forever, it is just a part of The Stages of Detox that happens when you discontinue use. This is one easy lifestyle change you won’t regret making.

The Crazy Reason Why This Type of Sweat Makes You Smell 4x Worse

The Crazy Reason Why This Type of Sweat Makes You Smell 4x Worse

This week, Mary decodes: Nervous sweat & why it smells so bad.

Nervous sweat (aka stress sweat) is something that I have experienced first hand. I was so stressed and nervous before doing one of the biggest presentations of my professional life; presenting to a group of over 200 investors, and Sephora merchants, in San Francisco for the Sephora Accelerate program.

Ironically, the presentation was about my natural deodorant company! Yes, I applied my deodorant and washed my underarms with anti-bacterial soap about 100 times as I was terrified I was going to smell after I walked off the stage and I will tell you why.

Why do you smell worse when you’re stressed or nervous?

When you’re stressed, your brain signals your body’s nervous system known as the ‘fight-or-flight’ center. Adrenaline and cortisol (a steroid hormone that helps the body respond to stress) is released into your bloodstream, which then activates the apocrine glands to start sweating. Odor-causing bacteria thrives on the fatty type of sweat produced from the apocrine glands, which creates a very unpleasant odor.

Nervous Sweat vs Normal Sweat

Your body has two different types of sweat glands.

Apocrine Sweat Glands

These are found mostly in your underarms area, genital area, and on your feet.

These glands become activated immediately to psychological stress or to an “event”. It produces a thick fatty sweat that is full of proteins and lipids.

Bacteria loves this type of fatty sweat and thrives when there are proteins and lipids. When bacteria mixes with this type of fatty sweat, it creates a very pungent odor.

This is why you are told that nervous sweat is the worst for many reasons but the main reason is because it SMELLS the worst.  The unfortunate part of a nervous situation is that it creates odor, which can also add more stress.  It’s a lose-lose situation!

Eccrine Sweat Glands

These are found all over your body.

These glands become activated through exercise or exposure to heat. It produces the watery sweat to help cool your body down. As this type of sweat is mostly composed of water, it tends to be odorless.

That is why even if you leave the gym drenched in sweat, you won’t smell as bad.

Tips to prevent nervous sweat odor breakthrough:

It’s inevitable that we all experience nervous situations and stress. Here are some tips that will help you stay odor-free, even through the most stressful situations!

1. Wear a natural fabric. This is very important as rayon/polyester will smell like crazy as it loves to hold odor.  Your best option is to wear cotton or bamboo under your clothes to help absorb excess moisture. Read more about fabrics and odor here.

2. Prepare your skin with an odor-eliminating soap to create a barrier on the surface of your skin before you apply the deodorant this leaves a residue on your armpit that will help to keep it bacteria free before you apply your deodorant.

3. Practice deep breathing/meditation before a stressful situation to help relax your blood vessels and to lower blood pressure.

4. Stay hydrated! Your body produces sweat when you’re dehydrated to help regulate your body’s temperature.

5. Watch what you eat! Onions, garlic and spices will add to the situation, so stay away from these type of foods until you are in the clear!

3 Ways to Kickstart Your New Years Detox

3 Ways to Kickstart Your New Years Detox

As hard as it is to believe, the holiday season is just around the corner. For many, this means falling off the healthy eating wagon and slacking on workout routines, because who can resist sugar cookies? Here’s the good news — you don’t have to give those up! We have three easy ways to kick-start your new years detox before the holidays, without cutting out your favourite holiday treats!

1. Detox Your Underarms

Switching to a natural, charcoal deodorant is an easy change that makes a great difference for your body.

Antiperspirants, which contain toxic ingredients, including aluminum – block pores, thereby preventing you from sweating. This also traps toxins within the body! By switching to natural deodorant, your pores are free to breathe. Take the 30 day challenge of detoxing your underarms by using the takesumi detox® charcoal deodorant!

Don’t know where to start with natural deodorant? The NEW kaia naturals the takesumi detox® charcoal underarm detox kit has everything you need to make the transition to natural deodorant easy and odor-free.

Available here.

2. Detox Your Skin

Don’t just detox from the inside, detox from the outside too! Detox your skin so it glows this holiday season!

Dry brushing is a hidden gem in the detoxing world and is amazing for treating dull, congested skin. It works by stimulating your lymphatic system and expelling waste and toxin build up.

The best part about dry brushing? It’s super easy! Just take it from Province Apothecary founder Julie, who dry brushes her face daily. “Facial Dry Brushing is my favourite morning ritual to effectively detoxify and wake up my face. It takes less than 1 minute to do and the benefits are endless.”

Ready for glowing skin all year long? Try Province Apothecary’s NEW Daily Glow Facial Dry Brush and pair it with their toner and serum, available here.

Your skin will be brighter, toned and detoxified!

*PRO TIP: It’s important that you dry brush first thing in the morning (on dry skin) to kick-start the body’s natural lymphatic detoxification system that has been asleep all night.

3. Detox Your Body With Matcha

There’s no better way to detoxify your insides than with matcha!

Made with high levels of chlorophyll, matcha works to eliminate unwanted toxins, chemicals and heavy metals from your body. It’s also great for reducing stress, increasing energy levels and boosting memory and concentration!

Want to give it a try? Matcha Ninja powders make trying matcha easy (and delicious)! Simply add some to your water bottle and shake.

Or, if you’re feeling something warm, try a matcha latte:

Ingredients

  • ½ cup hot water
  • ½ cup organic almond/ coconut milk
  • ½ tsp Matcha Ninja
  • 1 tbsp honey, maple syrup, or stevia to taste (optional)

How To

  1. Measure ½ tsp Matcha Ninja to cup
