Yes, you can use dry shampoo if you have an itchy or sensitive scalp — but the type of dry shampoo matters. Many aerosol dry shampoos contain alcohol, synthetic fragrances, and propellants that can dry out the scalp, disrupt the skin barrier, and make sensitivity worse. 

The Takesumi Detox Dry Shampoo is a plant‑based, non‑aerosol formula, which makes it a much better choice for reactive scalps. Instead of harsh ingredients, it uses ultrafine rice starch, arrowroot powder, tapioca starch, kaolin clay, and diatomaceous earth — gentle, natural absorbents that sit on the surface of the scalp and help control oil without causing irritation. 

Why it’s better for sensitive scalps: 

  • No aerosol propellants (which can be drying and irritating) 
  • No harsh alcohols commonly found in spray formulas

The tinted version is designed to blend seamlessly into dark hair, not to fully “cover” it like a cosmetic pigment. The tint is lightly pigmented on purpose — just enough to prevent the white cast that brunettes and darker haired individuals often experience with traditional dry shampoos, but not so heavy that it transfers onto your hands, scalp, or clothing.

Because this dry shampoo is packaged in a non‑aerosol spray bottle that uses wing‑lift technology, the powder needs to move freely inside the chamber so the wings can catch and propel it. Unlike aerosol cans (which rely on gas pressure), plant‑based powders require a little movement to activate the spray mechanism. 

If the spray feels weak or inconsistent, it usually means the powder isn’t sitting on the wings. A quick reset is all it takes. 

How to fix it (simple and effective): 

  • Give the bottle a side‑to‑side shake (not just up and down). 
  • This helps the powder shift and settle onto the wings inside the chamber. 
  • Once the wings catch the powder, the spray becomes smooth and consistent again. 

Most of the time, one or two side‑to‑side shakes is enough to get the perfect spray.

It’s best to use the Takesumi Detox Dry Shampoo before your workout. Because this formula is plant‑based and uses ultra‑fine rice starch, applying it before you sweat allows the powder to sit at the roots and absorb moisture as it happens. 

When you apply dry shampoo after a workout, your scalp and hair are already damp with sweat, which makes it harder for the powder to absorb effectively. Rice starch works best when it’s applied to dry hair, so pre‑loading it before exercise helps prevent sweat buildup, and scalp odor. 

Aerosol formulas can leave heavy residue due to synthetic starches and propellants. Plant‑based powders like rice starch and arrowroot are finer and lighter, making them easier to brush out and less likely to clog follicles.

Remarkable! I’ve been using it since I received it. With the hot summers and the environment I work in,it gets sweaty quickly, and this keeps my hair looking professional and looking pretty darn good when it’s time to clock out. I chose the darker tone because of my ash blonde roots and it blends it well enough. It still itches my scalp a bit but not as bad as the drugstore brands did.

The only complaint I have is when the powder gets lower it gets harder for it come out even when you shake it. It doesn't go up the pump. There's a lot left over so I have to open it up and use a brush to get it in.

On two separate occasions, I followed the instructions, including using a decent amount of product and not rubbing it in, but my hair was still oily the next morning. The second time, when I used even more product to try to avoid the greasiness I had experienced the first time, the excess product got on my pillow. I was also still less than happy with the result. Overall, I like this brand and wanted to love this dry shampoo, but unfortunately it was not for me.

Love it and the scent. I actually think I prefer it over the everyday pharmacy dry shampoo.

With the everyday pharmacy stuff I find my hair gets almost clumpy. This particular brand, it seems to make my hair feel fuller and thicker but without a clumpy and odd look to my hair. I think Iƒ??ll buy this again. It will depend how long it lasts for me as the price point is a bit high for me.

I prefer using this before bedtime so that it has enough time to activate soak up the oils (I have no problems with transfer to my pillow). I also find that this could be a good texturizer as well. I also really love the pump dispenser as most clean dry shampoos are typically in cans. Which means you?›????d have to tap it out and use your hands to rub the product into your hair. At least this way it?›????s not too messy. Though with that said, you should also be mindful of the amount you?›????re using because I sprayed too much when I first got this. But now I know exactly how much I need in order for this to be effective. The powder isn't totally white since it contains brown tint. There?›????s also some fine reflective pieces/glitter (not chunky) which is pretty cool. Overall I really love this product! I?›????m not showering my hair as much these days, so I?›????m happy to have something that works.

I've tried many many dry shampoos & this is by far the best. Use before bed and in the morning hair is very refreshed looking and doesn't feel grungy. It seems to absorb oil and then dispense with it. Doesn't build up on scalp like other dry shampoos. One bottle lasts 2 months and a half used once a week when used just on the roots. Just purchased 2nd bottle and it will remain a stable on my shelf. I've extended the time between hair washing from 2 to 3 or even 4 days.

I've been using dry shampoo since 2007 and so far it's been impossible to find a clean one with a good application system. This really works if you use as directed - at night before bed, don't shake it out. Only negative is my husband laughing at me because of the visible circles of powder in my hair. I don't mind, I wake up with clean hair!

I LOVE this dry shampoo. It's light, perfectly scented, and gets the job done so well. I HATE the pump... it truly does not work. I know that the pump is better for the environment, but I'd like to think they could a better functioning one that is still safe for the environment. Whenever I buy this product, cut open the packaging and pour it into an old shaker bottle and use it that way. It's been the only way I'm able to use all of the product
